6.Grenzjager Baon
Part of K.u.K army in Bosnia and Herzegowina was Grenzjager force. Established as Border patrol it had 6 companies, during the war in late 1916 the companies were expanded to battalions. The Grenzjager served as frontline troops , fighting in Balkans (Bosnia and Herzegowina, Serbia, Albania,Montenegro, Macedonia).
Companies latter battalions(Baons) were raised in following army districts(peacetime army corps)
Grenz JB # 1 - In 1918 was 49% German, 29% Slovene, 15% Czech - from IX District
Grenz JB # 2 - In 1918 was 42% German, 41% Polish, 15% Czech- from Ist District
Grenz JB # 3 - In 1918 was 91% Magyar (rest were mixed north Hungarians) from VI District
Grenz JB # 4 - In 1918 was 40% Czech, 24% German, 23% Polish,10% Croatian
Grenz JB # 5 - In 1918 was 34% Magyar, 32% Slovak, 15% Croatian, 10% Polish-was Ist District
Grenz JB # 6 - Had Croats and some Serbs -was from XIII District
As we can see Grenzjager baons 4,5 and 6 had Croat soldiers . Baon 4 and 5 had small percentage of Croats and I have never seen mail posted to Croatia from this units.
Grenzjager baon 6 was almost purely Croatian, raised in XIII district which covered whole of Croatia-Slavonia.
In major work about K.u.k Army "ÖSTERREICH-UNGARNS LETZTER KRIEG, 1914-1918" , 6.Grenzjager baon is recorded on several places:
In early 1916 -baon is with Trebinje Mobile Group as Grenz Jaeger Company 6
In late 1916- baon is with Montenegro Garrison troops - Grenz Jaeger Baon VI On 26.08.1918 Grenz Jaeg Bn# 6 Captured Kote 1900 (South of Lunga in Albania):
Nafziger Order of Battle says :on the 15.10.1918, 6th Grenz Jäger Battalion is on route to Army group Albania from Bulgarian division "Ohrid"
